Friends Of St Mary’s : Historic walks

walks_webThe Friends of St Mary’s are happy to announce forthcoming walks, guided by David Brown, Ted Ruscoe and Martin Sheppard

The interests of Hampstead Heath – Saturday 12th April

Meeting at 11.30am at Whitestone Pond, Hampstead

Starting from the top of Heath Street and will take in areas of interest around West Heath and Sandy Heath including the houses where many famous people have lived – Lord Leverhulme, William Blake, Elizabeth Fry and others. Led by local long-time resident Ted Ruscoe.

Historic Primrose Hill – Sunday 27th April

Meeting at 2.30pm at St Mary’s Church, Primrose Hill

Led by Martin Sheppard, the author of Primrose Hill: A History, this walk will explore the hill’s remarkable past. Once owned by a hospital for leprous maidens and then Eton, it was the site of many duels as well as of a Martian landing in 1898. Twenty extraordinary plans to build on it included a replica of the Parthenon and a giant statue of Shakespeare.
