Lent 2018

Dear members and friends of St Mary’s,
Lent begins tomorrow on Ash Wednesday, 14th February, This year it coincides with Valentine’s Day, but if you have evening plans you can still come to church and be ashed at one of the earlier Eucharists. Services are at 7.30 am, 12 noon and 8 pm (Sung Eucharist with sermon).Lent groups will begin to meet next week. In addition or as an alternative, a daily online Lent resource may be found here:

A new enquirers’ group for adults considering the Christian faith, and possibly baptism and confirmation, will meet in church after the parish Eucharist (12-1 pm) on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month, beginning this Sunday. There will be a Quiet Day in church on Saturday 10th March, led by Miriam Rinsler, who invites us to reflect on St Augustine’s great acclamation, ‘Our hearts are restless till they rest in thee’.

Week of Guided Prayer – once again during Lent we are offering a week of focused prayer and Scripture reading with the added support of a personal Prayer Companion. We are asking everyone who participates to block out an hour a day from Monday 12th to Friday 16th March with the sole purpose of a half an hour for personal prayer and reading of scripture, and a half an hour for time to meet with your Prayer Companion.  The aim is simple, to intentionally immerse ourselves in prayer and Scripture to hear what God is saying to each one of us.
This week really is open to everyone.  There are Prayer Companions who may be able to meet you at home, on a lunch break at work, or in the evening after the family are settled. This is an amazing opportunity and we look forward to praying and listening with you during that week.
There will be a meeting at which participants will be able to meet their Prayer Companions at 4 pm on Sunday 4th March in church. Please email Marjorie at if you would like to take part.

May we all have a blessed and peaceful Lent in preparation for the Church’s greatest feast of all.
